Stump grinding vs. stump removal: which do you need?

After a tree comes down, you're left with a stump. There are two ways to deal with it, and they're not the same job.

Stump grinding

A grinder chews the stump into wood chips, down below the surface of the ground. The roots stay in the soil and break down slowly over time.

  • Good for: lawns, garden beds and most yards
  • Less disruption: no big hole and less damage to the surrounding lawn
  • Leaves behind: a pile of chips that can be used as mulch or hauled off

Full stump removal

The whole stump and the main root ball are dug or pulled out of the ground.

  • Good for: spots where something will be built, like a foundation, a driveway or a pool
  • More disruption: leaves a large hole that has to be filled and leveled
  • Usually more work: heavier equipment and more time

How to choose

If you just want to mow, plant grass or put in a bed, grinding is almost always enough. If you're building right on that spot, ask about full removal.

One thing to do first

Buried utility lines need to be marked before any grinding or digging. In Georgia, the free locate service is Georgia 811 (call 811).
